 "I have never done anything like that before and it was quite a job at the time to get permission from my father to be in a beauty contest."

 

Miss World 1963, the 13th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 7 November 1963 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London, UK. That year Carol Joan Crawford from Jamaica got the first MW crown for her country. She has been one of the biggest surprises in the history on the pageant. That year she surpass the stunning Miss Denmark and the beautiful Nordic beauty from Finland. Her princesses were Miss New Zealand (2nd), Finland (3rd), Denmark (4th), Sweden (5th), United Kingdom (6th) and France (7th). Among the Semi Finalists were Brazil, Colombia, Korea, Liberia, Malaysia, Ceylon (Nowadays Sri Lanka) and United States.

Today, Crawford resides in Canada and she is a housewife.

  • Carole is known for been the first woman of color to win the Miss World crown. Her skin however is white she only has some African American features.

     


  • Crawford was the first womann born in the Caribbean to win the title.

     

  • Miss World 1963 stands 1.59 cm, very short for beauty standards.

     

  • During the beauty competition, which was held in London, Crawford wore a specially designed swimsuit with a high neckline so that she would appear taller.

     

  • Chile, Colombia, Liberia, Malaysia, Mexico (Disqualified for been under age) and Nigeria had their debuts.

     

  •  The stunning Miss Denmark went to Miss Universe 1963 and placed first runner up.
