Miss World 1972, the 22nd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held at the Royal Albert Hall on 1 December 1972 on BBC. 53 delegates vied for the crown won by Belinda Green. That year was the year of Australia, the country won three very important titles Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Asia Pacific and was 1st runner up in Miss International.
Belinda was noticed immediately after she arrived in London. During the final night, her fresh beauty and unique look conquered the judges. The top 5 included the stunning Norway (2nd), the sweet Israel (3rd), the elegant Austria (4th) and the exotic Miss India (5th). Completing the top 7 Miss Finland (6th) who will later become Miss International 1973 and Miss UK (7th). Guam, Mexico, Philippines, Seychelles, South Africa, Thailand, United States and Yugoslavia completed the top 15.
Back in Australia, Belinda did some modelling, promotional work and TV, and ended up becoming the third wife of advertising boss John Singleton. They had two daughters before splitting five years on. Only now does she has finally feel she’s found her place in the world: living on a farm outside Cowra, spending most of her time rescuing, and caring for, injured and orphaned wildlife, doing charity work, and traveling around.

Lynda Carter Belinda said on an interview, “I felt terribly insecure too, and I knew I wasn’t the most beautiful girl around. When I did appearances, I almost felt like I was a walking apology. By the end of the year, I just wanted to come home.”
Miss Finland who ended 6th, went to become Miss International 1973.
